57년도에 녹음된 Thelonious Monk의 앨범 [Thelonious Himself]는 고집세고 괴팍한 성격의 소유자로 알려져있는 Monk의 놀라울 정도로 섬세한 터치로 청자의 마음을 사로잡는 음반이다. 특히 후배 섹소폰주자 John Coltrane을 자신의 슬로우 Bop에 유유히 끌어드리면서 발라드 재즈의 매력을 극대화시켰다. Vernon Duke의 "April in Paris"를 시작으로 자신이 작곡했던 "'Round Midnight"과 "Monk's Mood" 를 여유로우면서도 고혹한 매력을 담아내고 있다.
